School olympiads and competitions

School olympiads and competitions give pupils the chance to show their knowledge and talents beyond ordinary lessons. Any pupil interested in a particular subject or field can take part: Romanian, mathematics, foreign languages, sciences, history, geography, the arts, sport and others.

Each school year, the Ministry of Education and Research approves the list of national school olympiads and competitions and their calendar.

How the stages are organised

As a rule, olympiads have several stages:

  1. the school stage, organised by the subject teachers;
  2. the local or county stage, organised by the Bistrița-Năsăud County School Inspectorate (ISJ);
  3. the national stage, for pupils who qualify.

The number of stages and the qualifying conditions differ from one subject to another and are set out in the rules of each olympiad or competition.

How a pupil can enter

  • The pupil tells the subject teacher, the form teacher or the primary teacher that they are interested.
  • The teacher informs them about the stages, the syllabus and the dates.
  • Some competitions require the written consent of a parent.

Prizes at olympiads and competitions may also count at other stages of a pupil’s school career, under the conditions set by the methodologies in force (for example, for the award of the merit scholarship in grade 9).

Good to know: The calendar of olympiads and competitions for the 2026-2027 school year is published by the Ministry and the school inspectorate. The school’s teachers tell pupils which stages they can take part in.
